Derby Landmark DisappearingBirmingham Iron Foundry with long-gone Birmingham
Canal in foreground Starting in 1836 the Birmingham Iron Foundry and its successor organizations occupied a prominent place in the economy of the city of Derby. However, in 1997 Farrel's closed its doors for good and is nothing but a fond memory as it was torn down to make way for a Home Depot store.. But lest anyone forget, generations of Valley families passed through the imposing set of buildings producing heavy machinery used in the rubber and plastics industry around the globe. During the Civil War they turned out bayonets and rifle barrels. Though the Derby facility is now gone, Farrel's continues to exist with its headquarters in Ansonia. |
