Sister City Visit - Day 2

In the new vineyards at the Jones Family Tree Farm in Shelton

Day two included morning trips to area businesses guided by Bill Purcell, President of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce with Joy DeMarchis of Valley United Way's Volunteer Action Center acting as translator. The group were then joined by Mayor Garofalo for lunch hosted by the Derby/Shelton Rotary Club at Connie's Restaurant.

The afternoon brought on the agricultural part of the trip as the delegation headed for the Jones Family Tree Farm in Shelton. Actually they headed for Pumpkinseed Hill for the annual pumpkin harvest in time for Halloween. While there they discovered that the Jones family has begun the development of a vineyard - can a marketable Valley wine be in the offing - perhaps the mayor of Puglianello could offer some advise.

It was then a mad dash to Ansonia City Hall where the delegation sat in on a session of the Leadership Greater Valley Program where an exchange with participants brought out the differences both in government and in volunteerism between Puglianello and Derby.

The day was capped at Derby High School where the Board of Aldermen adopted a proclamation proclaiming the official Sister City relationship between the two towns. A large crowd was entertained by the Derby High School band prior to the start of the program and refreshments and a social after the event.

Day 3 will involve a morning trip to Sikorsky aircraft, an afternoon visit to Tele-Media Cable and an evening of Italian music at a special fundraiser being held to benefit the high school band and chorus trip to Puglianello in 2003. (The concert is sold out!)
