Newport, RI

Newport, RI is one of the communities that had a fountain, but eventually let it go and it is in private hands at the moment. The fountain was shipped to Newport from the National Humane Alliance in September, 1911 and installed in place of an existing fountain on Washington Square. One report attributed the successful efforts of P. J. McGowan, president of the board of aldermen in New York City.

The fountain stood there until the 1950s when the fountain was decommissioned and a private collector was reported to have rescued it from a quarry and relocated it to Belcourt Castle. It was on public display in the courtyard there until 2010 when a restoration expert purchased it. You can see it's current condition in the picture below.
