Troy, NY

Troy is another one of our mysterious National Humane Alliance fountain cities. We had seen many references to Troy being among the many cities in New Your state to receive one and even a mention of it being located at Fifth Ave., Jacob and King Sts. However we had no pictorial evidence that it happened even though it seemed likely.

Our friend Bill Chilles and the other good people at the Vinalhaven Historical Society just sent us the picture you see above. He noted that Glens Falls was written on the back. However, we checked with the historical societies in Glens Falls and they don't believe it is Glens Falls. One person suggested we look at other NY cities like Troy - and we are doing so. At the same time, we did a Google map search for the original fountain location noted above and here is what we found:

Though the location has changed dramatically, we believe that the buildings that you see in this picture are the same ones from the picture at the top though the corner building with the awning is long gone.

And now we have another picture from Vinalhaven with a different viewing angle of the fountain. This postcard also had a Troy postmark. The church is now just a vacant lot, but the two pictures coupled with the Google map views have given us the proof we needed for the existence of the Troy fountain.

Here's another look from Google to give you a perspective of the location click on it for larger view:

We'll keep looking for more information including the year that Troy received the fountain, and if anyone finds information or a picture, please pass it along, but for now we are taking these pictures as the real deal for Troy!
