Derby History Quiz

Everyone in Derby thinks they know all about Derby High School Football, but most were completely stumped by our question on football. We asked which two coaches completed at least one full year and finished their Derby careers undefeated. DeFilippo, Ryan, DiCenso? They all had undefeated seasons (DeFilippo (6), Ryan (2), DiCenso (1)) All great coaches, but they all lost games. However, in 1913 and again in 1967 Derby had coaches that went undefeated and then left. Bill McAllister went 8-0-1 in 1967 and B. Gordy was 5-0-0 in 1913. There was also an undefeated (6-0-1) season in 1905, but we don't know who the coaches were between 1902 and 1908.

Only Rick Dunne who played a little football at Derby High School himself knew the names of the coaches and the years they pulled off their feats. Many others knew of McAllister's record, but no one else knew about the B. Gordy's.

Incidentally, Derby posted undefeated records in 1905, 1913, 1932, 1937, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1973, 1975 and 1990. The 1969, 1973 and 1990 teams were named state champions in the poll conducted by the New Haven Register.

Information for this quiz came from the commemorative 75th Anniversary Booklet for the Ansonia/Derby Football game in 1992.
