Smithville

Even without a picture, many of our regular (and some not quite so regular) quiz masters had little difficulty identifying Smithville as the  beginnings of the modern down town center of Derby on the western banks of the Naugatuck River. Industrialist Sheldon Smith had the vision, and for a while the name as industry quickly became the key to the economy of Derby. The name Smithville did not stick for long however as it soon became Birmingham - a borough of Derby.

Correct answers were received from: Lisa & Wendy at Valley United Way, Robert Hyder, Pat Dimon, Mary Lou Boroski, Kimberly Shelton, Randy Ritter, Ann Searles, Jack O'Callaghan, Ron Thomas, Edward Baclawski, Dave Petz, and Gene Wajdowicz.
