Derby History Quiz
An Early Hotel
The Bassett House was located on Elizabeth St. where the SNET
Telephone building is today. The Bassett House was once the home of Shelton Bassett. Later
it became a hotel where the actors and actresses stayed while they performed at the
Sterling Opera House. In 1911 a terrible fire destroyed the Bassett House. The Hotel Clark
which was named after Charles E. Clark, was built in its place after the fire. The hotel
was managed by the late Christopher D. O'Brien. Correct answers were received from:
Mayor Marc Garofalo.
The quiz was produced by Mrs. Blackwell's fourth grade class at Irving School.
