NEW or OTHER BUSINESS:

Glenn Gaetano is planning the second annual Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Race. Dennis O'Connell will be coordinating Derby’s assistance in this event. He noted that Derby provided the police services last year on the Derby side of the race.

DIRECTOR REPORTS:

Parks & Recreation Director’s Report: Mr. O'Connell reported that the Pop Warner season is winding down with the possibility of one of the teams in the play-offs. Three of the cheerleading squads will be competing in the New England regional competitions.

Registration for youth basketball is underway. It is being advertised in the newspapers and flyers are being distributed in the elementary schools. Practice will start November 17th and games should start the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Shelton High School football has used Derby’s field twice and things went smoothly. With the problems Shelton is having with their construction, it was uncertain if they would seek more time but no request has been made, as of yet. Shelton High School receives revenue from the gate but Derby is receiving funds from the sales at the concession stand.

The budget is going well. There will be some painting at the field house, press box and scoreboard. Mildew is being addressed in the boy’s shower room.

The Derby Veteran's Community Center is doing well with membership maintaining and even increasing the numbers. He was confident that the revenue budget figure would be achieved. The gymnasium will be heavily utilized during the winter months. Youth basketball (4 nights per week), corporate rental (1 night per week) with the over 35 using the facility after the rental, parochial league (Saturday), over 35 (Sunday morning) and 5th and 6th grade basketball (Sunday afternoon). The cheerleaders are now practicing in the gymnasium. The High School programs will be using the gymnasium after school starting late in November.

It was noted that the budget shows $400 in line item 390-0019-0000 for the cheerleaders Hawaii trip. This was incorrectly applied with the distribution of revenue received from the Coaches Day Grant and should have been applied to wrestling. Mr. O'Connell will speak with the City Clerk about this matter.

Athletic Director’s Report: Mr. Marcucio was not present.

Committee Reports:

Programs Committee – Ms. Izzo suggested holding a first aid/CPR course for the coaches. Members were favorable to the idea. She will coordinate the needed funding with Mr. O'Connell and make arrangements for the course.

Facilities Committee – Bids for Witek Park field construction are advertised and will be opened on October 29th. The lawsuit has yet to be resolved.

It was noted that Shelton’s skate park is on hold while they pursue matters with the State. There continues to be interest in the park and with the joint venture with Derby.

The Greenway project is awaiting permit approval from the State. It was hoped that the plan could go forward this year but it has been delayed. Construction should begin next year.

A motion was made by Karen Izzo and second by David Mikos. Move to adjourn this meeting at 7:48p.m. Motion carried unanimously.

The next Parks & Recreation Commission meeting will be Monday, November 10, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall. If the Aldermanic Chambers are unavailable then the Veteran’s room will be requested.

Respectfully prepared,

Karen Kemmesies, secretary
