Jim Carey Named 2008 Honorary
Race Director
Commodore Hull Race Chairman Glenn Gaetano has announced that veteran
baseball and football official Jim Carey will serve as the Official Starter for the seventh annual Thanksgiving Day 5K road race.
Carey, a 1945 graduate of Derby High School served as Past President of
the Valley Umpires Association, the New Haven Basketball Association and
the CT Football Officials Association.
Carey played football, basketball and baseball at Derby High School. He
was the captain and leading scorer for the D.H.S. basketball team that
finished second in the 1945 Class B state tournament. Following a
three-year stint in the U.S. Navy, he lettered in football at American
International College, Springfield, MA. He earned his Masters Degree
from the University of Hartford.
He
began his teaching career at East Hartford High School in 1949. Carey
then taught and coached several athletic teams at Trumbull High School
for 29 years.
In
addition to officiating high school and college football, baseball,
basketball, and softball for over 35 years, Carey also served 20 years
as Program Director for the Valley Catholic Youth Organization
Basketball League. He is the Past President of the Valley Umpires
Association, and the Western CT Football Officials and still serves on
the Board of Directors fro the CT Football Officials Association. He
still serves as a timekeeper at high school football games. You can also
find him regularly at the Shelton Community Center where he is still
active in running the Shelton playground program.
No stranger to awards for his
personal accomplishments, he is a member of the Trumbull High School
Hall of Fame, the CT Football Officials Hall of Fame and the CT Amateur
Softball Association Hall of Fame.
"We are pleased that Jim has been named the Official Starter for this
year's race", said Gaetano.
He will always be considered one of the most respected baseball and
football officials in the state, and his dedication to youth athletic
programs in the valley has been terrific, Gaetano said.
Carey said it was an honor to be named this year's Official Starter for
the popular road race. "The Thanksgiving Day race has really become a
nice Valley tradition for everyone", he said. "It brings people from the
Valley together and raises a lot of needed money for the Boys and Girls
Club."
Carey and his wife, Barbara, are long-time Shelton residents. Their six
children attended the local schools and they now enjoy spending time
with their 13 grandchildren.
