George P. Sullivan
George P. Sullivan holds a rather unique distinction. He served seven
terms as mayor of the City of Derby, but what makes that even more
unusual is that his terms were not consecutive! His service
spanned the years from 1903 to 1938. He served as Derby's second
mayor from 1903-1904 and then came back to serve again from
1912-1920. He wasn't finished however, as he came back once more
to serve from 1935-1938! He was born in Derby and attended St.
Mary's School. He dropped out of school at age 14 to become a
plumber. He learned his skills well, and became a foreman in the
Derby Gas and Electric Company. He also served on the Board of
Aldermen and was street commissioner in 1908 and 1909. |
