Derby History Quiz

As we quickly move to the end of the century, we thought
we'd recognize one of Derby's oldest civic groups, Benevolent
and Protective Order of Elks. The Elks formally came into
existence on April 17, 1900 in the Knights of Pythias Hall on
Main Street. Its first Exalted Ruler was James T. Smith and there
were 61 members. The club dedicated its own brand new building
on February 21, 1917, and it has been in that building ever since.
Interestingly, on the night of the formal dedication, this group
received a generous $20,000 gift from a non-member of the club
- Friend A. Russ which paid off all debt on the building.
