The question was: What was the name of the Indian tribe that
lived in Derby before the white settlers arrived in this area?
The Indians that lived in the Derby area were the Paugasuck Indians. These Indians lived in wigwams and they hunted, fished, and raised crops for food. The Paugasuck Indians eventually disappeared from the area because they traded their land to the English settlers. The last known Indian family that lived in Derby was the Mack family. In 1833 most of the family members died of smallpox. The three remaining children left the area. It was never known what became of them.
