Donated Shoes Lift Holday Spirits

Mayor Marc Garofalo and Valley United Way President Jack Walsh examine shoes being donated

Just some of the shoes waiting to be picked up.

Hundreds of shoes located in the old Hubbell's Shoe Store on Main Street are on their way to the needy thanks to the generosity of the City of Derby and Hubbell's. The City bought the building earlier this year and Hubbell's relocated to a new location on Pershing Drive. Left behind were hundreds of new, high quality shoes that had not been best sellers. Mayor Marc Garofalo called the Mony Kohn owner of the shoe store who agreed that the best use would be to donate them to the needy.

Derby High will help distribute shoes to the needy.

Mayor Garofalo then contacted Valley United Way President Jack Walsh and asked United Way to help identify agencies in the area who could use the shoes. Within a short period of time a list was created, the shoes were moved to the main floor and sorted and a distribution date arranged. As a result, the following groups now have quality shoes to distribute to those in need:

Area Congregations Together / Spooner House
Bradley School
Derby High School

St. Mary School
