Irving School Teacher is Derby's Teacher of the Year

Derby Irving School Fifth Grade Teacher Christina Guerra is the Derby School District’s choice for 2015 Teacher of the Year.

Guerra was chosen for the top honor from among a group of teachers from each of the district’s four schools who were nominated by their peers for their excellence in teaching and extraordinary contributions to Derby’s students, families and educators.

Guerra has been a teacher in the district since 2012.

“Mrs. Guerra is an outstanding educator,” said Irving School Principal Jennifer Olson. “Mrs. Guerra works tirelessly to design lessons that promote the utmost in student engagement and discourse. With a true focus on the best interest of her students, lessons are formatted to be challenging and engaging to learners. She is always willing to share ideas and information with colleagues.”
According to Olson, Mrs. Guerra has filled a myriad of responsibilities on a regular basis.
Her primary responsibility has been as a classroom teacher, however, she is member of the Irving School’s School Personnel Development Grant (SPDG), Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS), and is a district member of the English Language Arts Curriculum Writing Committee.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Conway said that Mrs. Guerra was chosen for Teacher of the Year because she is an outstanding educator who is always willing to go above and beyond her regular classroom duties. “Mrs. Guerra follows and completes the curriculum planned by the state and district,” Conway said. “Her performance as a teacher is professional and conscientious. Mrs. Guerra is a valued asset to the Derby School district.”

Mrs. Guerra will be honored at a ceremony on August 25, 2014 when the district’s teachers return to school for professional development activities. Also to be honored at the events are the three other teachers who were chosen as Teacher of the Year at their individual schools. Those teachers are: Nichole Green, Art teacher at Bradley Elementary School; Jennifer Andrews, sixth-grade English Language teacher at Derby Middle School and Victoria Cardoso, a chemistry/science teacher at Derby High School. In addition, we will be honoring our Paraeducators of the Year. Those paraeducators are: Cindy Joel, Bradley School; Maria Bowers, Irving School; Annette Ochoa, Derby Middle School and Pamela Queen, Derby High School. Maria Bowers has been chosen as the District’s Paraeducator of the Year.
