Remembering 1990 Girls Cross County Team

Derby's Girls Cross Country Team has risen to elite status in the last two years producing a first place State Class "S" Championship last year and a third place this year, but many don't know that the program has had success in the past. Derby took a step towards remembering and recognizing one of those early successes on Sunday, November 5 when the Derby Running Club and the Derby High School Athletic Hall of Fame held an event to recognize the success of the 1990 team.

The 1990 team got off to a rough start under Coach Joe Musante with a record of 3-9. However perseverance and motivation combined to turn that around and the team finished the regular season with a record of 11-9. They then proceeded to finish fifth in the prestigious New Haven County Meet where they were the smallest school competing in a field dominated by much larger schools. A slow start was turned into a fast finish and a fifth place finish earning a plaque that went to the elite five finishers. It marked the first time in the history of the program that the team had won an award. Three members of the team – April Mirmina, Christie Froehle and Kelly Byram -- earned All-Valley honors that year, while April also was an All-Housatonic League, Second Team, selection. Shortly thereafter, they also finished fifth in the Class "S".

The trophy that the team won in 1990 vanished from the trophy cases at Derby High School along with several others during a reorganization at the high school several years ago.

The recent success of both the girls and boys programs (Ken Little was the boys Class "S" state champ this year!) brought about discussions of earlier success - and the missing plaque. Mike Cannicci from the Hall of Fame Committee told Joe that the Committee would replace the missing plaque and the event was set up. Several members of the 1990 team as well as members of the current team were on hand to see the presentation of the new plaque which will now join many other athletic awards in the trophy cases at Derby High.
