A "Wild" Time on the Greenway

The Christian Community Church is really putting the emphasis on "community" by adopting the beautification of the Derby Greenway as a community service project for the entire church. Under the direction of Pastor Walt Mayhew, members of the congregation have been working to transform several areas of the Greenway and to clean up some of the graffiti that has plagued the popular trail since it first opened.

On May 5, they began their work with an experimental project to transform one of the banks on O'Sullivan's Island into a panoramic wild flower planting. Greenway officials asked church members to tackle the project as a pilot for a potentially bigger project in the future if this succeeds. They are hoping that the ground coverage provided by the wild flowers will not only secure the soil on the bank, but also provide a colorful backdrop for the thousands of walkers, runners and bikers who enjoy the path each week. If this trial proves successful, the city will look to plant wild flowers along the entire inland surface of the flood control walls in the future.

On June 9, they came back and completed two more planting projects. They created a small garden of bushes and flowers which have condierably brightened the area. They also planted a white birch tree in the circle at the center of the scenic turnaround overlooking the confluence of the Housatonic and Naugatuck Rivers. We want to thank the members of the Church for their community spirit and also Markanthony Izzo who produced the video below which shows the congregants at work on May 5.
