Vinalhaven, ME

Vinalhaven, Maine has two nearly identical fountains, but only one is a true National Humane Alliance fountain. The Main Street fountain pictured right below does not have a National Humane Alliance plaque on it, but rather a dedication to Moses Webster. Moses Webster was the president and co-owner of the Bodwell Granite Co. which quarried the National Humane Alliance Fountains. Webster died in 1876 and in 1910 his son-in-law F.S. Walls had the fountain erected. It is more ornate than most of the other fountains with a large light on top.

The National Humane Alliance Fountain was erected in 1911 and is still located in its original spot on what is now known as Robert Cassie Square - which is actually more of a triangle. It also has a more ornate sign on top of the fountain proclaiming its location on Robert Cassie Square. Robert Cassie was from Vinalhaven and died after being gassed in World War I, so the naming of the square post dates the erection of the fountain.
