Derby's Paugassett Hook & Ladder Co. 4 has been working with the Shelton Fire Department for years to drape the huge American flag from their ladder trucks in the middle of the Derby/Shelton Bridge portion of the race course, but in 2006 they decided to present a new race award for the fastest fireman participating in the race. Tom Hope, a member of Shelton's Huntington Company #3 won the inaugural trophy. Tom finished fifth overall with an impressive time of 17:23 Tom starred on the cross country team at Shelton High School and is now competing in cross country and track at the University of New Haven.

Another UNH student, Robin Pitt (pictured above) was the second fireman to finish and the 7th overall finisher. Robin hails from Hong Kong and is a fireman back home.
