The Oldest House in Derby

Joseph Hawkins House

In an earlier quiz, we talked about the "oldest house in Derby" which was believed to be Brownie Castle which it is believed dates back to at least 1692. (Sadly, Brownie Castle was demolished in 2016!) However, we have recently learned of the possibility that the Joseph Hawkins House on Hawkins Street is probably older with construction  as early as 1672 - three years before Derby was officially incorporated by the state of Connecticut! The home site was originally four acres in size, but it's down to a much smaller foot print today. It was moved during its lifetime, but not very far,  and the current owner, (John Poole) has an incredible website where he tells the complete story. Click here to visit and learn much more and see more pictures.
