Derby Celebrates Memorial Day
Even a little rain at the end of the parade didn't
dampen Derby's enthusiasm for honoring its veterans with a holiday weekend of activity
that included a flag rally, parade and rededication of a venerable monument honoring World
War I veterans. Activities began on Saturday with a rally on the Green in support of the
flag and ended on Monday with the traditional parade attended by thousands of excited
onlookers who withstood a thunder shower at the end of the parade.

This year's festivities included the rededication of the cannon
in front of the Veterans Memorial Building. Walter Archer Jr. of Boy Scout Troop 3
undertook the restoration of the cannon which was brought over from France and placed in
front of the building in 1920. Archer was working on his Eagle Scout project working on a
community service project to demonstrate leadership skills. |
