Memories of Derby High School - 1930's

Eleanor Castiello & Anthony Pepe, DHS class of 1938

As members of the Class of 1938, we were fortunate to have many activities which helped us to form life-long friendships. This is evidenced by the success of our many reunions throughout the years.

In September 1934 we entered the Derby High School with 220 class members, the largest class to ever enter Derby High. Our class gave Derby the best Football and Basketball Teams in Derby High history. We were honored with the football All-State championship title and our basketball team was in the Semi-Finals in the Interscholastic Tournament held in the Arena.

Ryan Football Field was built and dedicated during our Senior year, when we played Hillhouse and beat them!!!

Under the guidance of our beloved music teacher, Thomas Wrigley, we performed the operetta, H.M.S. Pinafore, on the stage of the Sterling Theater, which hopefully will soon be restored to its former glory.

In June 1938, we graduated at the Commodore Hull Theater with a class of 162 members, the largest class to graduate from Derby High School. Many members of this Class went on to serve in World War II where unfortunately we lost one of our classmates, Raymond Gagliardi.

As the years go on, our numbers get smaller and smaller but the memories and friendships never fade.
