The Methodist Episcopal Church was the first church built around the Derby Green, sitting at the north end along Fifth Street. It was not the first church in Derby, but it was the first church built in the Borough of Birmingham which is what the current downtown area of Derby was called after previously being referred to as Smithville. The church was eventually replaced by the current edifice which stands on the corner of Fifth and Elizabeth, but the main entrance is still on Fifth Street.
