Crew Racing on the Housatonic in Derby
A near photo finish on the Housatonic! The Housatonic River on Roosevelt Drive in Derby is home to the Yale Crew and the beautiful Gilder Boat House. Races today may not draw the same crowds that they once did for the legendary Derby Day, but they still represent a great opportunity to see this world renowned sport on the very attractive venue along the Housatonic.
In 2006, Yale honored the memory of the Valley's only Gold Medal winning Olympian, Ansonia's John P. Cooke, on Saturday, April 8 by christening the newest shell in the Yale fleet in his honor. Cooke. a 1959 graduate of Yale, was part of Yale's Gold Medal winning team at the 1956 games in Melbourne, Australia. The christening of the new shell followed the men's and women's races against Dartmouth. Click here for a full story and photos.
