Norfolk, VA Fountain

We want to thank David Sullivan, Executive Director at the Slover Library in Nofolk for tracking down these great photos of Norfolk's National Humane Alliance Fountain. The photos are courtesy of the Sargeant Memorial Collection at the  Library Norfolk Virginia.

Norfolk Mayor Riddick accepted their fountain and turned the water on during a ceremony in November, 1907 as reported by the Virginian Pilot:

The fountain seems to have disappeared during street improvements around 1939. The library forwarded pictures of the intersection around the fountain from 1940 which show the traffic flow being reconfigured and the National Humane Alliance Fountain having been removed.

The fountain stood just south of Norfolk’s Confederate Monument on Commercial Place as you can see in the picture below. This monument was removed in June, 2020.
