George P. Sullivan
GEORGE P. SULLIVAN
SEVEN TERM MAYOR
FOUR DECADES
OF SERVICE
1903 - 1938 |
George P. Sullivan holds a rather unique distinction. He served
seven terms as mayor of the City of Derby, but what makes that even
more unusual is that his terms were not consecutive! His service
spanned the years from 1903 to 1938. He served as Derby's second
mayor from 1903-1904 and then came back to serve again from
1912-1920. He wasn't finished however, as he came back once more to
serve from 1935-1938! He was born in Derby and attended St. Mary's
School. He dropped out of school at age 14 to become a plumber. He
learned his skills well, and became a foreman in the Derby Gas and
Electric Company. He also served on the Board of Aldermen and was
street commissioner in 1908 and 1909.
In reporting his 1903 inauguration, the Washington Times noted that
Sullivan left his regular job at 11:550 and went directly to city
hall to be inaugurated and announce his appointments. The Democratic
mayor who was following Republican Mayor Phillips had let it be
known that no Republicans need apply. He also announced that he
favored labor unionists and younger men. A paper in Harrisubrg, PA
said that Sullivan was on e of the "four labor union Mayors of
Connecticut". He was a critic of the "walking delegate" in labor
unions and opposed extravagant salaries for union leaders.
