Stokes House

Stokes House

Directly across the street is 65 Elm Street. A two room house was built here in 1778 but the house as it stands today was probably constructed about 1830. It is not known if the earlier building was torn down of if it is incorporated into the present structure. However, the original fireplace is still in the cellar. In the 1850's it was owned by James Stokes, husband of Caroline Phelps, who was the daughter of Anson Greene Phelps, founder of Ansonia, and for whom the city is named. It was used as a summer home for the family and Anson G. Phelps spent a good deal of time here. Caroline Phelps Stokes, Ansonia's granddaughter donated Ansonia's library to the city.
