Race Committee Selected for Prestigious Award.
The Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce has presented the Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5K Road Race Committee with the prestigious Silver Award which is part of the Chamber's Annual Gold Seal program. Since 1971, the Chamber has presented the awards to the region's business and community leaders "who exemplify the spirit of selflessness and volunteerism. The awards are among the most time honored community service awards that the Valley has. When the awards began in 1971, the Gold Awards were for individuals. In 1986 the Silver award was added for for volunteer groups or partnerships that have made extraordinary contributions to the community. In 2001, they added a Platinum Award for a past Gold Seal winner of at least 10 years who have continued to volunteer their time and resources on behalf of the community.
The Commodore Hull Race Committee is being honored for creating a community event that has brought runners back to the downtowns of the two cities, honored the memory of one of the greatest naval heroes in U.S. history and raised close to $100,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley. It is especially significant as the United States is in the midst of celebrating the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and Commodore Isaac Hull's command of the U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides).
