Voters Reject School & Recreation Plans

The unofficial results are in, and you are getting them first here on the web. Voters in the city overwhelmingly voted no to all three questions placed before them in a city-wide referendum held on Saturday, June 10.

The School Expansion Plan and the Recreation Facilities Enhancement Plan.

Question 1:          “Shall the $31,125,000 appropriation and bond issuance authorization (to be paid in part from a $15,842,369 estimated state grant) for the construction of a new Derby High School, including improvements to Ryan Athletic Complex, as adopted by resolutions of the Boards of Aldermen and Apportionment and Taxation, be approved? YES/NO" 

Results: YES - 853    NO - 1,519

Question 2:         “Shall the City (only if the $31,125,000 appropriation for the new High School in Question One is approved) appropriate and authorize bonds in the amount of $9,685,000 (to be paid in part from a $1,786,266 estimated state grant), for the conversion of the existing High School to a Middle School, as adopted by resolutions of the Boards of Aldermen and Apportionment and Taxation? YES/NO” 

Results: YES -  879   NO - 1,449

Question 3:         “Shall the $3,740,000 appropriation and bond issuance authorization for Improvements to the athletic fields of Bradley School and Witek Park, including new soccer and little league fields: as adopted by resolutions of the Boards of Aldermen and Apportionment and Taxation, be approved? YES/NO”

Results: YES -  751   NO - 1,537

The total cost of the three questions is $44,550,000 including the costs of short term construction loans. Of that total, state reimbursement is projected to be $17,628,635 leaving the cost to taxpayers at $26,921,365.
