Phil Padilla of Portland, Oregon pulled away in the last quarter mile after dueling with former three-time champion John Critelli of Redmond, Washington in a neck and neck battle for most of the race to win the 2010 Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5K Road race. Justin MacGregor of Derby had jumped to the early lead as the three of them ran in a pack across the Derby-Shelton Bridge into Derby.Critelli took over the lead as the three of them headed up Elizabeth Street and MacGregor fell back a bit. It became a two man duel from that point on as Critelli was about a step ahead of Padilla until Padilla took a step lead as they turned the corner at Main Street in Derby and headed back across the Derby/Shelton Bridge into Shelton. MacGregor was about 40 yards behind. Critelli and Padilla were side-by side along Howe Avenue, and Critelli pulled ahead as they headed down Hill Street onto the Riverwalk where Padilla caught and passed Critelli breaking the 16 minute barrier to win in a time of 15:59. MacGregor was third in a time of 16:21. Kim Battapaglia dominated the Women's Division as she complete the course in a time of 18:58 and won for the fourth straight year matching the four titles won by John Critelli. Her time was was the best since Kristin Wenstrom set the course record in 2003 at 18:50. They are the only women to have broken the 19 minute barrier. This was the second title for the Padilla family as Mike Padilla won the very first race back in 2002.Mike who now lives in Pennsylvania also ran this year.
