Men's Division Preview? We recently received this following race preview from Jim Sweeney. He's got a handle on some of the favorites for this year's run. Do you agree? Let us know on Facebook. The 14th Annual Commodore Hull Road Race, the largest running race in the Valley with over 700 runners, is shaping up to be an exciting one. The men's side will feature a very competitive field, led by Ansonia's Tim Milenkevich who will be looking for the three-peat. Doing so would bring Milenkevich closer to John Critelli's impressive 4 win streak from 2005 - 2008. Milenkevich has had a strong summer of racing, including a 4:16 road mile and several sub-16 minute 5ks. But his recent 16:25 3rd place finish in the Northeast Utilities Hartford 5k on October 12th, over 40 seconds slower than his 15:43 time from last year at the same race, leaves the door open to challengers, including: · Bobby Giuliani - The Shelton High School and University of Hartford graduate has been runner up to Milenkevich for the past two years. Running strong times of 16:08 (2012) and 16:11 (2013), Giuliani finished second by the narrow margins of 11 seconds and 12 seconds. Recently, Giuliani posted a quick time of 15:44 on September 20th at the Run to Break the Silence 5k in East Hartford - a time that coincidentally matches the long standing course record for the Commodore Hull Road Race set back in 2003 by Jeff Roginielewicz. · Jake Krong - Hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah, Krong will be taking his first swing at the race. By far the most accomplished runner in the field, holding personal bests of a 2:20:41 marathon, 1:05:45 half marathon, and 30:03 10k, Krong recently ran 2:21:12 at the Chicago Marathon with 5k splits of 16:23, 16:13, 16:22, 16:21, 16:11, 16:46, 17:17, and 17:34. Yes, that's right, he ran those times for eight 5ks in a row! While Krong looks unbeatable based on his running credentials, he's not. In 2012 he finished 2nd in the Newtown Turkey Trot in a strong, but not unbeatable time of 15:50. · Mike Padilla -The Shelton native and Cornell University graduate, will return to his hometown again to race. The winner of the first Commodore Hull Road Race in 2002 in a time of 16:08, Padilla has finished fourth in both 2011 and 2013. Padilla is coming off a solid summer of racing, including a 16:05 win at the Great Valley Corporate Center 5k in Pennsylvania on September 16. · James Mas - the 16 year old Junior from St. Joseph High School, is having a strong cross country season, including a 16:57 win at the tough Wickham Invitational (varsity, unseeded race) and a swift 16:37 5k at the Windham Invitational. The race up front should be fun to watch as it unfolds across and connects the two great towns of Shelton and Derby. Mayor Lauretti Named "Honorary Starter"

Voluntarism Runs Deep in This Race Family |

Our volunteers are celebrities on more days than
just Thanksgiving, and a mother/son combination were both recognized
during the past week for their service to the community beyond the
race. Pam Petro, a committee member since the very inception of the
race is being honored as one of the "Women Making a Difference in
the Valley" by the Valley Women's Health Initiative. She'll be
honored at a luncheon on October 2.

Chris is now at the University of Connecticut, but he'll be back to help again this year as he has been for more than a decade now. And though we couldn't find a picture of husband John and daughter Lauren with Pam and Chris in our archives, we can't forget to mention that they are also race volunteers. It's not surprising that we don't have that family picture of all of them together on race day - they're always too busy volunteering somewhere along the course. We'll have to correct that omission this year! |
Wrapping up last year's race and getting ready for the 2014 race with Jeanne Connors of sponsor Greco & Haines making a presentation of a $15,000 check to Shaye Roscoe of the Lower Naugatuck Valley Boys and Girls Club as race committee members Glenn Gaetano and Tom Wilson look on. The $15,000 represents the proceeds from last year's event. Greco & Haines, the very first sponsor of the race will be back as the main sponsor again this year.
